Aberlour 16 Year Old (Double Cask Matured)

Aberlour_16We tried the Aberlour 16 at the distillery. You can see a bit of the tasting room in the photo at the top. Pretty classy eh? According to the website the 16 was matured in first fill ex-bourbon casks and sherry butts. I am not sure about the wording though so I do not know if they used first fill sherry as well. I am guessing no. Correct me if I’m wrong! It seems to have collected quite a few awards:

2012 WWA (Best Speyside 12 to 20 years)

2012 IWSC Gold (Scotch whisky)

2013 IWSC Silver Outstanding (Scotch Single Malt – Speyside)

2013 SFWSC Gold (Single Malt Scotch – 13 to 19 Yrs)

2014 IWSC Silver Outstanding (Scotch Single Malt – Speyside).

Well let’s see how we like it…

Distillery: Aberlour

Age: 16 Years Old

ABV: 40%

Cask Type: First Fill Ex-Bourbon and Sherry (Not sure if this is first fill sherry as well)

Price:  ~£45 (£43.90 from Master of Malt)

Glenfarclas £511.19s.0d Family Reserve

Glenfarclas_511At first glance, you might think it’s a bit weird to put the price of the whisky right on the front label. Then you might think that this is pretty expensive for an NAS whisky. Well fear not, that’s not the price of the bottle on the label. That’s the price of the distillery.

Perhaps some explanation is in order. Glanfarclas distillery was licensed in 1836 by Robert Hay. For reasons unknown (but speculated to be due to health issues) Robert sold the distillery to John Grant in 1865 for £511.19s.0d. 1865 happens to be 150 years ago. So this expression was released to commemorate the 150th year of Grant ownership of the Glenfarclas distillery. Hence the name. As you may know Glenfarclas is one of the last remaining family owned distilleries. The Grant’s are still in posession of this fine establishment and they seemed to have a liking for the names John and George. The succession of owners goes something like this: John, George/John, George, George, and John.

Distillery: Glenfarclas Distillery

Cask Type: Mostly first fill sherry butts

Age: NAS

ABV: 43%

Price:  ~£90  (£82.79 from the Master of Malt)

Hibiki Harmony Blended Whisky

Hibiki_HarmonyAnd here comes the third addition to the flagship NAS Suntory whiskies completing their all star trifecta. First it was the Yamazaki and Hakushu Distiller’s Reserve and now this, Hibiki Harmony. The NAS (No Age Statement) movement is catching momentum in the Scotch industry but it has practically taken over the Japanese whisky industry. Nikka discontinued all their age statement single malt core expressions and are releasing new NAS whiskies to fill the void. While Suntory now have a new starter range for each of its three big “brands”. Interestingly enough, the Hibiki Harmony is priced just about the same as the Hibiki 12. So it’s probably somewhat inevitable for prices on the 12 to shoot up in the near future. Or perhaps the 12 will vanish like so many others. Only time will tell.

One thing I find interesting is the naming. Hibiki supposedly means “echo” or “resonance”. So this new expression could be translated to “resonance of harmony”. Very acoustic. Perhaps hinting at the cyclical nature of the whisky industry with its booms and busts. I suppose Suntory are quite pleased with the recent popularity of Japanese whiskies which has led to the creation of this NAS bottling. I can only imagine what names they will use when the whisky bubble bursts.

Type: Blended Whisky

Distilleries: Yamazaki, Hakushu, Chita (presumably)

Age: NAS

ABV: 43%

Price:  ~£50 (£49.99 at Master of Malt)

Aberlour 10 Year Old

Aberlour_10Although we have had the Aberlour 10 before, it was nice to visit it again at it’s birthplace during our tasting at the Aberlour distillery. Matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks, it has the sweet softness that makes for easy drinking and is often used as a gateway dram for new whisky drinkers.

Distillery: Aberlour

Age: 10 Years Old

ABV: 40%

Cask: Ex-boubon and Sherry

Price: £25 (£24.89 at Master of Malt)

Compass Box Hedonism Quindecimus

CompassBox_Hedonism_Quindecimus

There aren’t too many companies like Compass Box. I think of them as being on the cutting edge of whisky. Always experimenting and poking at the rules. Trying to push it into the future. As a result they’ve received some harsh rebukes and sanctions but I guess that’s what happens when you push the limits. As for this particular expression from Compass Box, it’s a special batch of a special idea. The original Hedonism was one of the first blended grain whiskies to push into the luxury market. I guess the name kind of gives that away a bit. Some people are dead against grain or simply unimpressed, but I think there are some notable exceptions. Hedonism is one of them. The Quindecimus is their special batch produced for their 15th Anniversary. For their 10th they had the Maximus. You can kind of see a trend in the naming. While the makeup of blends is typically guarded more closely than nuclear launch codes, Compass Box have revealed all in typical compass Box fashion.

Here it goes (from the Whisky Exchange Blog):

  • 17.6% North British 20yo from first-fill American standard barrels
  • 36.6% Port Dundas 25yo from rejuvenated hogsheads
  • 8.4% Dumbarton 28yo from American standard barrels
  • 19.4% Port Dundas 20yo from first-fill American standard barrels
  • 18% 32yo Loch Lomond mystery blended grain from American standard barrels

Oooh ahhhhh.. Whisky recipes! Anyway before I get on with the tasting notes, I’d like to give credit to the main dudes at Compass Box, John Glaser and Gregg Glass. John Glaser obviously being the founder and captain of the ship and Gregg Glass doing some real legwork. We met Gregg Glass at a special Water of Life Society tasting in 2014. He’s a cool guy with a passion for his craft. Props to that.

Bottler: Compass Box

Type: Blended Grain

ABV: 46%

Price: ~£130 (£128.00 at Master of Malt)

Glenlivet 12 Excellence

IMG_20150806_111109~2

Oh Glenlivet 12, yeah I’ve had that before. Except you haven’t! This is the Glenlivet 12 Excellence and as much as that sounds like some marketing mumbo jumbo this is indeed a completely different spirit. The Glenlivet 12 was in fact my first Scotch whisky. Pretty typical I guess since it’s the number one selling single malt in the USA. A lot of people overlook it because of it’s staggering availability but guess what they’ve removed the 12 from the UK market. And this Glenlivet 12 Excellence was never even on the UK market! According to the folks at the distillery it is only available in Asia and at the distillery. So naturally we had to have it. They say it’s more sherried than the standard 12 but I think it’s a bit more special than that.

Distillery: Glenlivet

Age: 12 years

ABV: 40%

Cask Type: Predominantly Sherry

Price at Distillery: £38.80

Gordon & MacPhail Exclusive Mortlach 1989

IMG_20150806_110908Oh Mortlach, you tasty tasty devil. You used to be all cool like and affordable, but now look at you. Sold out first chance you got leaving the rest of us to scavenge for what remains. I forgive you. AliceInWhiskyland and I saw this intriguing expression at the G&M shop in Elgin. We had a taste of it there and decided that we needed to take home a bottle. For those who are not so familiar with Mortlach, it has recently been repositioned as a luxury whisky brand by their proud owner Diageo. What this means is that an official bottling of Mortlach 18 will be about £174 in the shop. Pretty hefty. So what we have here is a G&M bottling at 50% ABV of ~25 year old heavily sherried Mortlach. That’s magical.

Distillery: Mortlach

Bottler: Gordon and MacPhail

Distilled: 1989

Bottled: November 2014

Cask Type: Refill Sherry Hogshead

ABV: 50%

Price: £125 at Gordon and MacPhail Elgin Shop

BenRiach 18 Years Old Albariza

BenRiach 18YO Albariza

Oh BenRiach! You make great whisky! And now you have something new! Well that sums up my feelings when I heard about the Albariza. BenRiach have done a pretty good job of explaining what this expression is so I’ll just copy and paste:

“The BenRiach 18 Years Old Albariza is part of the new heavily peated range. Originally matured in American oak casks, the whisky is then finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks.

The name ‘Albariza’ is derived from the typical white soil used for growing grapes in the production of sherry in the Andalucia region of Southern Spain.

Bottled at 46%, at natural colour and non chill filtered, ‘Albariza’ is available on a strictly limited basis.”

Nice and easy.

Distillery: Benriach

Age: 18 Years Old

Cask: Aged in American Oak then finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks

ABV: 46%

RRP: £71.95 at MoM
