Kilchoman Sauternes 4th Club Release 2015

Kilchoman_Sauternes.jpg

Oh boy! I was excited when I saw the news about this one! A heavily peated sauternes cask whisky? Yes please! Kilchoman? Yes please! This is the 4th club release from Kilchoman, which may mean that we will see a larger general release much like the Madeira cask expression. Let’s hope!

Update! As of September 2016 Kilchoman haqve launched their first general release of the Kilchoman Sauternes Cask Matured.

This release came from 3 Sauternes casks which resulted in only 909 bottles. Distilled in January of 2011 and bottled in 2015, the whisky is 4 years old. Oh yeah full maturation! Not finished.

Kilchoman Madeira Cask Matured

Kilchoman_Madeira

Woot woot!  Madeira and Kilchoman! The day has come! As some may know Kilchoman released a bit of a teaser of this release for the 3rd club release in 2014 which was also matured in Madeira casks. This particular batch is comprised of whisky fully matured in 17 first fill Madeira casks. Distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2015, these should be about 4 years old. Young by normal whisky standards but Kilchoman march to their own tune and have been doing it very well.

Distillery: Kilchoman Distillery

Age: NAS (But most likely 4 years)

Distill Date: 2011

Bottling Date: 2015

Cask: Madeira Casks

Tomatin Legacy

tomatin-legacy-whisky

I must say that I am a big fan of the Tomatin 30 year old. So it was nice to try the Legacy which sits on the opposite end of the Tomatin lineup being a NAS whisky. We tried this expression at the Allied Glass tweet tasting. It’s interesting to see that a lot of the new NAS whiskies are incorporating virgin oak maturations. It may be a way to get more cask influence from younger whiskies or perhaps it’s from a shortage of bourbon casks due to the increasing demand from the Scotch industry. Could be both really, but either way I feel it is shifting the average flavour profile of Scotch whisky. This is not necessarily a bad thing and has happened in the past. For instance the shift toward bourbon casks from sherry when UK laws changed so that sherry could no longer be shipped to the UK in casks. While there will be some who lament this change, I think it is opening up more variety in Scotch. Well that’s just my opinion.

Distillery: Tomatin Distillery

Age: NAS

Cask: Ex-Bourbon and Virgin Oak

ABV: 43%

Price: £25.84

Old Pulteney 12 Year Old

old-pulteney-12-year-old-whisky

Good Old Pulteney! I must admit that I first tried this when I first came to Edinburgh. It was on offer at the supermarket and I liked the look of the bottle. Pretty noob of me but I was a noob. However, this is quite a credit to the makers of the bottle, Alllied Glass, who was kind enough to send us a sample of this expression for their tweet tasting. I’ve had a fare bit of this stuff but never thought to do tasting notes until recently. Well I guess I should begin then..

Distillery: Old Pulteney

Age: 12 Years Old

Cask: Ex-Bourbon

Inchmurrin Madeira Wood Finish

inchmurrin_madeira

Well well well, another Madeira finished whisky. I’m not shy about my love of Madeira matured whiskies. I think out of the three current official Inchmurrin bottlings this kind of ties together the funky nature of the spirit. The combination of the unusual character from the rectifier modified pot stills and the madeira finishing puts this expression way out there in terms of the flavour charts. We had this at the Inchmurrin tweet tasting and it was my favourite of the three.

Distillery: Loch Lomond

Age: NAS

Cask: Ex-bourbon casks and then finished in Madeira wine casks

ABV: 46%

Price: £55

Inchmurrin 18 Year Old

inchmurrin_18years

We tried this particular expression at an Inchmurrin tweet tasting along with the Inchmurrin 12 and the Inchmurrin Madeira Finish. As I’ve mentioned in the post for the Inchmurrin 12, Inchmurrin is a line of expressions from the Loch Lomond Distillery which comes from two of its special pot stills with rectifier columns fitted instead of the typical swan necks. You may not recognize the bottle as they have recently re-branded their bottlings. I quite like the new look and I suspect quite a few punters will too.

Inchmurrin 12 Year Old

Inchmurrin_12

If you are looking for an Inchmurrin distillery, look no further. It does not exist. This expression is from Loch Lomond Distillery. Aptly named as it is located near the famous Scottish loch. Loch Lomond is quite a peculiar distillery in that it has the capacity to produce a great variety of spirits. The distillery currently has 7 stills: 2 conventional stills, 4 stills with rectifier columns instead of swan necks, and a coffey still. Thus they are not only able to make malt whisky with different characters but also grain whisky. Their Inchmurrin line is produced using two of the modified rectifier stills.

Distillery: Loch Lomond

Age: 12 Years Old

Cask: From their website “The whisky is aged in three types of cask
bourbon, refill and re-charred casks for a period of 12 years”

ABV: 46%

Price: £34

SMWS 50.71 (Bladnoch) Alfresco Brunch

IMG_20151111_200438Not too long ago the future of Bladnoch was not looking too great. The previous owners were liquidating the distillery and no one seemed to be buying it. Of course even before all that it had been closed by United Distilleres (now known as Diageo) in the 1980’s (exact time of closure is a bit hazy due to gradual process). It was then sold to Raymond Armstrong, an Irish businessman, in 1994. Despite the terms of the sale saying that the distillery was not to distill again, Raymond got the approval of United Distillers to go ahead and reopen Bladnoch. It took a while to get things up and running but finally in the year 2000 the stills at Bladnoch started producing spirit once more. However, production seemed to be limited and eventually in 2014 the distillery was put up for sale. Due to the lack of distilling in the latter years and the lack of serious buyers, some people considered Bladnoch to be a closed distillery (ahem SMWS). However, as a big Bladnoch fan I insisted that it would not perish and low and behold it was pruchased in 2015 by David Prior, an Australian businessman. It is rumoured, however, that the first new bottlings will be made available in Australia only. Favouritism perhaps?

Anyway, no more worries about not having enough Bladnoch to drink. Seems like they still command a high price at SMWS. Probably because of how hard it is to find any Bladnoch whisky right now. Well I’ll take what I can get I guess. Still missing that SMWS 50.53 Monster Mango and Melon!

SMWS 29.173 (Laphroaig) Forget Time and Space

IMG_20151111_220855

Another SMWS Laphroaig! It seems they have been churning these out pretty consistently over the past few months. Great to see but I wonder how much longer this will continue. Well let’s enjoy this while it lasts. I must admit that although all the SMWS names are a bit silly and you really shouldn’t judge a whisky by its name, I am a sucker for advertising and this one definitely got me.

SMWS 72.47 (Miltonduff) Burnt Spotted Dick

SMWS_72.47

Well this is quite exciting! A white wine cask from SMWS! I was unfortunately too rushed during the preview tasting to ask about what white wine was used but I’ll update this post once I find out. There were two white wine cask matured whiskies in this outturn with the other one being the Ardmore SMWS 66.76. Both of these have similar ages so I suspect SMWS got their hands on a few white wine casks around that time. Could mean there are some more still maturing for later bottling! There aren’t too many white wine cask matured whiskies out there but the most notable one in my mind is the Glen Moray Chardonnay Cask which is a stunning example of value for money. Alright let’s dive in!
